About Breast Augmentation
Cosmetic breast surgery is a procedure that resizes the breasts to create a fuller appearance. It is often considered to be one of the most desired cosmetic surgeries, offering women who are unhappy with their breasts many options for enhancement. Using implants or a fat transfer, this procedure improves breast shape, size, and symmetry, and creates an attractive and natural-looking outcome. Portland, OR plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Bensimon is skilled in executing this surgery and performs countless breast augmentations each year. During your consultation at The Bensimon Center, Dr. Bensimon will listen to your concerns and desires and educate you on all of the options available while also creating a surgical plan to reach your goals.
During your consultation with Dr. Bensimon, the correct implant will be recommended based on your body frame, as well as the results you hope to attain. Implants come in different sizes and shapes — all of which are taken into consideration in order to attain your unique goals. Today, the most common implants are saline or silicone, both widely chosen and safely approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It is important to mention that individuals considering saline implants must be at least 18 years of age, while patients must be at least 22 years old in order to receive augmentation with silicone. Other options include gummy bear implants and a fat transfer. Aside from the type of augmentation chosen, there are other important factors to consider.
Implant size is determined based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline used. To understand the appropriate amount, Dr. Bensimon will look at how much original tissue exists and the size you desire to be. During surgery, it is common for Dr. Bensimon to temporarily switch out several implants to determine which ones work best.
Breast implants are made in either a round or teardrop shape. Both shapes are commonly used; however, a large majority of our patients select a round-shaped implant. It often looks more natural and adds a fullness to the upper breast region that a majority of patients desire.
Breast implant profile refers to the projection. Meaning, this is what one sees from the side view. The most common projections include low, intermediate, high, or extra high.
Making Your Choices
These options may appear overwhelming, but selecting the correct implant is easy once the goals are discussed during the consultation. These considerations, combined with the training of Dr. Bensimon, yield gorgeous-looking results.
Breast Augmentation Reviews
"I feel and look the way I have always dreamed thanks to Dr. Bensimon! I had 3 children by cesarean sections which wreaked havoc on my body. I initially met with Dr. Bensimon to discuss a "mommy makeover" (which in my mind was a breast augmentation and a tummy tuck). Dr. Bensimon suggested a cesarean scar revision, abdominal liposuction, and the breast augmentation. The surgery and recovery went very well. I was back at work in 5 days. The lipo healing process took about 2 months but it was worth it. I am a changed woman. I have a flat stomach now and breasts the size that better balance the shape of my body. I feel amazing and have more self confidence than I have ever had. I highly recommend Dr. Bensimon and his staff. They really listen and the results are amazing, speaking from experience!"- D.M. / Yelp / Oct 28, 2015
"I have gotten a breast aug here and Botox. Dr Bensimon is very nice and I love all the staff who work here. Everyone has been very nice, polite, and professional and I cannot complain about anything except I think maybe some of my questions were not fully answered/I felt like there were some things I was not fully prepared for or had explained.First, my breast augmentation. 7 months post-op, and I hate the breast augmentation because the implants are too low and I probably need another surgery. Understanding that not everyone gets the results they want in the first try or bodies are different and sometimes heal different than we hope for, it is disappointing that this is the situation.Second, I didn’t have a great experience with Botox here. I had told the lady who did my Botox where the shots were placed before (from another place), how many units, that I was happy with the previous results, and that my main concern is my forehead crease (because I like the smooth look of makeup when I feel like wearing it). This crease is not frozen right now, and is creasing my makeup. Although I can pay more to have the results I wanted, I didn’t feel as though the person doing my Botox listened to what I wanted, so I wouldn’t have another visit with the same person who did it.I do love their office space and there is virtually no wait time every time I have come here. There are two waiting room areas but I’m usually the only person or one of two people in the waiting area and even if I get placed into a room and need to wait a few minutes, I never have issues with my appointments running super long or having to wait an insane amount of time to see someone. Wednesdays are a type of post-op inspection day, which are pretty busy, but there has never been an insane wait time. If you are a person who believes in holistic healing mingled with science, this would be a great place for you! I definitely find the approaches interesting."- E.M. / Google / Sep 03, 2018
"I cannot say enough positive things about the Bensimon Center and my experience. I recently had a breast augmentation and liposuction of my neck and I am thrilled with my surgical results. The entire process has been great. Dr Bensimon answered all my questions and eased all of my anxieties. I knew exactly what to expect the day of surgery and in the days and weeks to follow. Every staff member has been caring and attentive. Dr Bensimon has been patient, compassionate, and more than generous with his time from my initial consultation to my follow up. I have been self-conscious with my body image and my breast size for many years and have considered augmentation multiple times. I have been hesitant about it as I did not know what to expect and feared the results would not meet my expectations. I felt that Dr Bensimon really listened to my concerns, expectations, and offered his expertise to help me determine exactly what I wanted. It’s so refreshing to have a physician that is truly passionate about his work; you can tell he truly loves what he does. I was also amazed by the ease of the recovery process. I was able to return to work within a few days and without discomfort!I would highly recommend Dr Bensimon to anyone considering plastic surgery."- E.J. / Google / Oct 03, 2018
"I Couldn't Be Happier! Why Did I Wait So Long? - Tualatin, OR - After several years of considering a breast augmentation, I finally did it last month! I could not be happier! I had a recommendation to see Dr. Bensimon at The Bensimon Center. He listened to my wants and concerns. He addressed everything! And not just in a clinical way, he addressed me person to person. On the day of my surgery, he met with me and genuinely cared about how I was doing,..."- M. / RealSelf / Oct 21, 2016
"10 stars if I could! I am over the moon happy with my experience with Dr. Bensimon and the Bensimon Center. I had a breast augmentation done 3 months ago, and my results are PERFECT! The whole experience could not have been better. I have thought about having a breast augmentation for many years, but after meeting with Dr. Bensimon, I knew he was the one to do it. Every interaction I had with staff was warm and welcoming. At my consultation, Dr. Bensimon was thorough, knowledgeable, and I knew our visions aligned. He also told me when some of my "goal photos" were not the right fit for my body type, which I appreciated more than anything. I think my biggest fear in this process was choosing an implant size that was too big or too small. After showing Dr. Bensimon photos, and reviewing my body type, we picked a size that would give me a "natural C" look. The size I ended up with are EXACTLY what I wanted! The recovery process was also a lot easier than I expected. I am so beyond happy, and so is my boyfriend :) . A part of me wishes I had this done years ago, but another part of me is happy I waited and found Dr. Bensimon! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"- H.N. / Google / Apr 17, 2019
The choice to have breast enlargement surgery is personal. If you are contemplating this treatment, it is important you do it for the right reasons. You should be physically healthy with breasts that are developed and be the appropriate age to get implants. If you are dissatisfied with the overall appearance of your breasts because they appear lifeless, you may benefit from breast augmentation surgery. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by weight loss or pregnancy, this surgical procedure can bring them back to life with increased volume. It is also a welcomed solution if you lift weights or have an overall lack of natural breast tissue.
Incision type, as well as implant placement, are decisions that are made before surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created and then the implant will be slipped into its position. There are a couple of methods that may be used for implant placement. These include either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Where to place the implant is based on numerous factors, including the type and degree of implant enlargement, as well as the opinion of Dr. Bensimon. Regardless of the incision, scarring is often hidden within the natural creases and lines of the body. Implant placement is determined based on your body type, implant size, and lifestyle.
What to Expect
Breast enhancement surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery using minimally invasive anesthesia. Once the incision is made, the appropriate implant will be inserted through the incision and deposited into a pocket created for it, and then fitted into its proper position. After this process, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives. All patients will be taken into recovery and carefully monitored and screened before being released. You will be sent home wearing a compression garment to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling and bruising will start to decrease, and the breasts will begin to feel normal as they settle into their new position. While individual results vary, most patients can return to normal activities within the first week; however, exercise should be avoided for at least 6 – 8 weeks. Breast enhancement surgery creates beautiful outcomes that look and feel natural. This treatment, in most cases, can be life changing for many patients, allowing them the chance to feel more self-assured.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your total cost for breast augmentation surgery will vary based on your implant choices and if you are having any other surgeries at the same time. Once your treatment plan is developed in your consultation, Dr. Bensimon can talk to you about estimated costs and financing options. To ensure your results match your goals and last a long time, it's important to focus on quality over costs.
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your treatment plan may include breast augmentation, a breast lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the position of the breasts while augmentation addresses the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Bensimon, he will listen to your needs and goals before explaining your best treatment options. A combination of both an augmentation and lift is often a part of a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, be sure to tell Dr. Bensimon during your consultation. It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants with the right surgical technique and placement. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter your results so it is best to wait until after you are done having children to have breast augmentation.
Can I have my implants removed?
You may decide at some point that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this happens, Dr. Bensimon can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants can either be replaced with new implants or simply removed. If you choose to have your implants removed, you may need to have excess tissue removed since larger implants can stretch your skin. If you have any questions or concerns after your breast augmentation surgery, schedule an appointment at The Bensimon Center to discuss your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still investigating a possible link between breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This is not breast cancer, but it is a cancer of the immune cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast implant-related ALCL is very rare and when caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Bensimon encourages all patients with breast implants to get regular screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Bensimon Center if you notice any concerns, such as swelling or other visible changes.
