Gynecomastia is the medical term for male breast enlargement. It is a condition that can result in a female-like chest due to the abnormal growth of breast tissue. In many cases, gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance of hormones. This condition can also be caused by certain drugs, steroids, major weight gain or loss, or genetics. Men with this issue generally feel frustrated and anxious, more so in circumstances where the chest area is shown, such as by the pool or in the gym. Seasoned plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Bensimon offers cosmetic breast treatment for men who have gynecomastia. This cosmetic treatment has a very high success rate. It is one of the more popular cosmetic surgeries for men at The Bensimon Center in Portland, OR.
"This center is very nice and the staff extremely good , a few years ago I heard about the Bensimon Center after searching cosmetic fillers on sale on the internet and the Bensimon Center was having a half price deal on all their fillers, I went in and got a beautiful job done on my lips , cheeks and chin area , I hope they have another 50% off sale , I would jump to go again and get my face serviced again. I love how beautiful and natural I looked , the results are addicting!"- H.H. / Yelp / Feb 08, 2019
"I received liposuction from Dr. Bensimon himself. Our initial consultation was great, I got to meet him and his nurses. They were thorough and open minded and very communicative with my needs, desires and wishes! During our two week pre op appointment, we took pictures and I met with two different nurses who were very thorough with me on information. They introduced a naturopath who gave me a lot of holistic information. I met once more with Dr.Bensimon. Day of surgery was amazing, relaxing and exciting. It was minimally invasive with no anesthesia. The procedure felt great and very comfortable. They played my my choice of music and gave me warm blankets and everything! I felt special, welcomed and that my outcome mattered. I highly recommend the Bensimon center!"- B.J. / Yelp / Jul 06, 2019
"was recently filmed giving a talk and was able to compare the way I look now to the way I looked when I was filmed six years ago. The changes in my face and neck have been remarkable.I’ve been seeing Andrea for two years now and we’ve done several things such as using the BensiSkin prescriptive skincare line, dysport around the eyes and mouth, Kybella on troublesome jowl and neck areas, and filler to soften typical signs of aging in spots like the temporal hollows, cheeks, under the eyes and lips. Andrea’s skill not only medically but artistically is exceptional. She has a beautiful, natural aesthetic to her work and is gentle and supportive with her patients.I don’t mind getting older, in fact, I enjoy it! I wouldn’t trade the wisdom and experience I have gained for my younger years. I do love transformation and taking care of myself. I’m very happy that I use these products and services as I embrace this next stage in my life with as much joy and beauty I want to express."- R.S. / Google / Mar 21, 2019

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure for men with visible excess breast tissue that cannot be corrected with diet and exercise. If you are troubled by the look of your chest (but are at a good weight), you may benefit from this surgery by Dr. Bensimon at The Bensimon Center. Male teens may also benefit from gynecomastia surgery; however, a future procedure may be necessary later during adulthood if new breast tissue continues to grow. During your first appointment with Dr. Bensimon, treatment options will be presented and he can answer all your questions and concerns in detail.
Fat removal is almost always utilized during gynecomastia surgery. Performed under general anesthesia, liposuction removes excess fat from the chest wall. Next, any loose or wrinkled skin will be excised to create a tighter appearance, and then the nipple will be placed in a more correct position. In most cases, this technique requires a small incision near where the glandular tissue resides. Once the fat and loose skin have been addressed, Dr. Bensimon will tighten the remaining skin.
What To Expect
After your gynecomastia treatment, the chest will be wrapped with a medical garment to help decrease swelling. In advanced cases where a more invasive technique was used, a drainage tube may be inserted to assist with fluid. The results following gynecomastia treatment are immediately seen and most patients are extremely pleased with the physical change. The incisions made during this procedure take a few weeks to heal and scarring is usually barely visible. With your enhanced chest, you can get clearance from Dr. Bensimon to continue exercise and strength training, which will assist in complementing the final outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does male breast reduction cost?
Gynecomastia is a medical issue that requires a skilled surgeon. This is why Dr. Bensimon urges you to focus on getting quality results over costs. To help make your surgery easier to afford, The Bensimon Center accepts many payment methods and we can also help you find low-interest medical financing. While male breast reduction is typically not covered by health insurance, it is worth talking to your provider to confirm.
What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is caused by a disruption in hormone balance. Most often, gynecomastia is linked to the long-term use of anabolic steroids or androgens. It can also be caused by using illegal drugs, like heroin and marijuana. Gynecomastia may also be caused by certain health conditions (for example, hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism, and tumors), as well as some medications (for example, highly active antiretroviral therapy for AIDS, anti-anxiety medications, and chemotherapy).
How can I tell if I have gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is excess breast tissue growth in the male chest, which may cause pain, tenderness, and swelling. Some men may have false gynecomastia (also known as pseudogynecomastia) so Dr. Bensimon encourages patients to try to lose weight with a healthy diet and exercise before seeking treatment for gynecomastia. If you still have enlarged breasts at a healthy weight, Dr. Bensimon can perform an examination and tests to diagnosis gynecomastia. This may include blood tests, a mammogram, or a biopsy to rule out other conditions, like breast cancer and mastitis (infection of the breast tissue).
Can gynecomastia be treated with exercise or pills?
The most effective treatment for gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any medications to treat gynecomastia. While they are not approved for the treatment of gynecomastia, some breast cancer medications (for example, Tamoxifen or Raloxifene) may have limited effects. Strength training to build the pectoral muscles cannot reduce the amount of breast tissue and may make the breasts appear larger.
Will this fix puffy or pointy nipples?
Glandular gynecomastia can cause puffy or pointy nipples. If this is a concern for you, please talk to Dr. Bensimon during your consultation. He will customize your treatment plan to use the best technique and incision pattern to correct your nipples. Large areolas can also be reduced during male breast reduction surgery. It's important to be open and honest with Dr. Bensimon about your needs and goals in your consultation so he can ensure you are happy with your results.
