Botox® has been used by millions of men and women around the world to improve lines and wrinkles that form on the face due to repetitive muscle movement. Botox® is also used to soften the movement of muscles around the eyes giving you a peaceful and serene appearance. Botox® is useful for younger patients as part of their “graceful aging” maintenance program and helpful for older patients who have deeper muscle patterns in the face and want to appear more rested and friendly.

Studies have shown that Botox® is also useful in improving mood and feelings of well-being. When you are no longer able to “scowl” or “frown”, the brain perceives that you are happier. This improvement occurs after Botox® treatments because negative signals to the brain, also known as peripheral feedback, are decreased.

Sensory information that travels from the forehead muscles to the trigeminal tract (a nerve pathway) is reduced when you are no longer able to animate the emotions of sadness or stress. The trigeminal tract then communicates with the brainstem, resulting in altered activity between the brainstem and the left amygdala (the area responsible for emotions). Hyperactivity in the left amygdala has been linked to anxiety and depression. It is this decrease of hyperactivity in the left amygdala that is believed to elevate mood and promote feelings of calmness.

At Bensimon Center, our goal is to help you look better and feel better. When choosing Botox® to help improve your appearance, keep in mind these other proven benefits to your overall wellness.
